Sylhouette Parfums Soleil Noir (Extrait de Parfum) is a fruity woody oud perfume that combines the energizing and destructive power of the sun in one fragrance. The sun is the main source of energy on our planet, its power is both a blessing and, over time, a destructive force. This philosophical concept can be easily explored in the fragrance in an olfactive way: the black sun embodies the decay of everything over time.

In the case of Sylhouette Parfums Soleil Noire, this is not to say that it is not an attractive perfume, but rather a crazy concept. The opening of the perfume is the beginning of life itself: lush notes meet resinous deep green galbanum. Death, however, is not long in coming: a poetic death, yet unexpected and sudden. From the base of the perfume, the oud’s animalic quality is pressed through and becomes smoky / boldly dominant. The sun continues the cycle of life, warmth is accompanied by atrophy and over-ripening. Rotting notes of apricot blend in a sirupy way with decayed woody notes. The embrace of life meets the devastation of death and comes together in a very unique olfactive bravura.

Sylhouette Parfums Soleil Noir is most definitely in the artistic category of being divisive. Along with that, or perhaps because of that, it is a masterpiece. Part of the Les Vanités perfume collection, it draws inspiration from the Vanitas (Vanity) art movement, paying homage to the beauty of death, the transience of time and the impermanence inherent in every aspect of life.
