Description
Stora Skuggan Silphium Eau de Parfum is a warm and spicy fragrance inspired by the most precious herb in history. Silphium (probably of the genus ferula) was a plant that grew in the area of Cyrene, present day Libya, and was widely renowned as a spice, medicinal herb and perfume ingredient throughout the empires of classical antiquity. It was praised by Greek philosophers and writers, as well as Roman emperors and cookbook authors.
There were many attempts to cultivate Silphium, but they inevitably failed. It would only grow wild in a limited area of the north African coast. This, in combination with its qualities as seasoning and medicine made Silphium the most valuable spice in the world, outshining both saffron and cinnamon. The demand for Silphium eventually became so overwhelming that it was harvested to extinction, and the taste and smell of the once greatest spice in the world were lost in time.
Stora Skuggan’s rendition of this historical plant is created by researching the surviving assumed relatives of Silphium. The ferula family are long stemmed flowering plants from Arid regions in the middle east and central Asia, and include such plants as the giant fennel, galbanum and asafoetida. The fragrance of these flowers have widely different aromas – at times deeply resinous, green and earthy, sometimes pungent and spicy. One thing that unites them is that they have been prized since ancient times for their iconic fragrances.
While they offer tantalizing glimpses into what Silphium may have smelled like, none match the fabled Silphium. With the help of age-old perfume ingredients and high-tech aromachemicals (the molecular building blocks of scents), Stora Skuggan has stepped in to create an accord that recreates the fascinating historical accounts of the flower’s iconic fragrance. Ginger, pepper and cinnamon are the luxurious spices of the classical world. Cistus labdanum resonates the sweet amber and tobacco richness of chypre perfumery. This is set against a background of ancient incense, woods and leather. A fragrance of infatuation and mystery that spans across the times.
Stora Skuggan Silphium was nominated in the 2018 Art and Olfaction Awards for Best Artesanal Perfume.
