Description
Rogue Perfumery Chypre Siam Eau de Parfum is a mossy green oriental chypre with a mysterious civet base. In Chypre Siam, Rogue Perfumery’s Manuel Cross has delivered an ingenious reinterpretation of Coty’s iconic ‘Chypre’ from 1920, transforming its structural framework into the scent of an eastern Asian rainforest. Initial notes are beautifully green, citrussy and mossy, yet on closer inspection the citruses have the sharp citronella tones of lemongrass and aromatic kaffir lime, while a hint of holy basil takes things defiantly to Southeast Asia. The zesty sparkle is almost immediately accompanied by wafts of burning joss sticks and a dry oakmoss overdose has something musty, infusing Chypre Siam with a sense of ancient wonder.
Rogue Perfumery Chypre Siam is more a chypre than the sum of its parts. Despite being constructed from an array of ingredients that are not typical of the chypre genre, the end effect has the floral heart and delicate, slinking animalicness of a vintage classic. Chypre Siam’s heart notes hone in on the forest floor with sweeping swathes of florals, both familiar and exotic. The tropical eroticism of ylang-ylang adds mystery to the classic carnality of jasmine. The special jasmine absolute used here seamlessly melds animalic civet notes into the sweet benzoin base – an oriental backdrop that functions as the perfect natural habitat for civet’s feline wildness.
Like the native stalking grounds of the Asian tiger, this mottled landscape – camouflage hues of burnt umbers, tans and khakis all under a green canopy – allows the feral base to take on new meaning. Seductive and beguiling, Chypre Siam is more mysterious than its European counterpart, yet it’s also more plush. A sultriness pervades the base as things heat up into something fruitier and stickier. The ever present oakmoss teams with the warmth of exotic woods to recreate just a hint of the softest leather. A sumptuous, seductive perfume to wear if you want to go on a journey to exotic terrain – tropical foliage frames a majestic wildcat as it stalks its prey, aromatic smoke from a distant temple fire infuses the air.
