Miguel Matos Unfold Extrait de Parfum is a modern niche perfume that starts ozonic fresh and turns dark, pulsating and brooding. Unfold is a fragrance about connections and connecting – temple worship and techno party, nature and the artificial, future scents and ancient ingredients and most importantly – the ritualistic communion between revellers at a rave. Miguel Matos himself describes Unfold as: ‘a journey from light to dark, guided by the pounding sound of techno beats, a ritual of freedom and joy. A tribal gathering at the industrial temple where cold turns to heat, carnal to spiritual. As the rhythm progresses, the entranced crowd ascends in extasy, as one, like incense smoke through strobe lights in the dark. Unfold is a scent of chiaroscuro, light and dark, natural and industrial, spirit and flesh. A celebration.”

Metallic notes and aldehydes in the perfume’s opening dissolve the thick fruitiness of cassis into sweet, heady fumes. Herbaceous and woody notes of lavender and fir as well as sweet violet and magnolia are sexed up by the rich textural suppleness of latex. Wisps of floating Incense are sullied by sweetly vanillic coumarin. The clash of sweet, woody, floral and synthetic elements in Miguel Matos Unfold shape the structure into a complex push and pull between the modern man made and the plastic. However in the base the woody earthiness of cypriol, otherwise known as Nagarmotha, grounds everything in the ancient smoked ritual of Eastern culture.

Miguel Matos Unfold deconstructs in order to unite – collapsing time in on itself, stretching the boundaries of reality and authenticity – placing hot machinery and smouldering incense on equal footing. After all, are not the devout and the debauched striving for the same thing? Something to which they can ecstatically belong and an anchor point that gives meaning to the journey of life.

Base notes: incense, coumarin, oakmoss, oud, cypriol
