Miguel Matos Ana Salazar Extrait de Parfum is a contradictory scent featuring a fabulous clash of glittering elements. A perfume that blends the visual and olfactory world, Ana Salazar feels almost monochromatic in its juxtaposition of light and dark, soft and hard, abstract and animalic notes arranged with artistic precision.

Miguel Matos Ana Salazar Extrait de Parfum is a limited edition release based on a collaboration between two Portuguese iconoclasts. One is perfumer Miguel Matos, whose daring olfactive concoctions have been causing a stir in the perfume world for a number of years now. The other is the eponymous fashion veteran, Ana Salazar, who still has something of a wild child reputation in her home country despite her many years in fashion.

Coconut, seawater, jasmine, cashmere, woods, caramel, musk and animalics: some may find this array of notes chaotic at first, but they are cleverly organised into beautifully complementing pairs. A tropical briny coconut is given feral body with just a touch of civet – not for the meek or the mild. The sweet, artificial melon notes of calone blend with skanky metallic undertones showing us how the heady sweetness of ripe fruit can transition into the decaying depth of flesh in just a shift of a molecule or the flit of a nostril. The suggestion of red, warm cedar in the base is chilled by an icy cold chemicality. The textural feel of a grounded, dry woodiness drenched in watery and mineral notes gives Ana Salazar a sense of never settling. It has a restless, free-floating energy which never lets up.

Miguel Matos Ana Salazar Extrait de Parfum is a scent of synthetic paradoxes that creates new possibilities in olfactory art. Like Salazar’s rebellious designs that shook conservative 1970s Portugal, this is a perfume of irreverence. For some it may read as a work of heresy that opposes fragrance norms. For others this is a celebration of the union of free spirits. Together they have created something exciting, dynamic, carefully structured and tailored to suit all those who want to make a bold fashion statement.
