Description
Mendittorosa Orlo Eau de Parfum is a striking niche fragrance lying somewhere between perfumed poem and beguiling recreation of the scent of human skin. Orlo manages to be both extreme and sophisticated at the same time as peppery elemi and a host of earthy spices embrace mature, tropical florals clinging to a darkly aromatic base. This perfume’s spiced opening features exotic notes of cardamom, pink pepper and cumin, which sit sharp and woody next to the dry kick of elemi. The spice mix’s intimate animalic tones are accentuated in the heart by a potent bouquet of neroli and tropical, floral ylang ylang. Its mildly indolic facets quiver at the centre of Orlo’s wetland body. The perfume’s languid base has a musty, almost dank quality thanks to saffron and fragrant, earthy papyrus. Oud and leather have a depth of body which recalls the richness of human skin. Mendittorosa Orlo Eau de Parfum is an exploration of the carnal aspects of elegant niche perfume. This is a scent about the fruits of the loin, as if botanical matter was born of human flesh. Like the aroma of delicate petals emerging from and retreating back into living skin, Orlo blurs the boundary between what is perfume and what is the intimate aroma of human embodiment itself.
Mendittorosa Orlo Eau de Parfum is the second creation from the ‘Versi’ collection within the ‘Odori d’Anima’ range. The ‘Versi’ collection (also including Ithaka) is an envisioned olfactive trilogy exploring the relationship between poetry and perfumery. Orlo Eau de Parfum is inspired by Sylvia Plath’s poem, ‘Edge’. First published in 1965, ‘Edge’ includes the famous lines about a mother imagining her children returning to her womb: “She has folded them back into her body as petals/ Of a rose close when the garden/ Stiffens and odors bleed/ From the sweet, deep throats of the night flower”. The poem is a melancholy musing about the relationship between motherhood, the natural world and the female body in society. Connecting human skin with the scent of flowers and using metaphors of woman as fertile life giver, the poem displays the heartbreaking frailty of our own corporeality, in which we are both embodied and detached at the same time. Similarly Orlo Eau de Parfum is a scent that occupies a borderland space. Is it the scent of our own skin? Is it a second skin? Is it a skin-like scent that never truly meshes with our own? Whatever it is, it is a fragrance that sits on the beautiful edge – inspiring the courage and inspiration needed to transcend the ghosts of convention which tell us where our limits lie.
Mendittorosa Orlo Eau de Parfum has a hand-crafted wooden cap painted in silver. The bottle features a hand-incised tablet depicting a serpent, traditionally symbolizing fertility and rebirth. The bottle is housed as usual in the classical ‘Odori d’Anima’ hand stamped wooden box, inspired by those used by Tuscan artist Alessandro Reggioli to protect his artworks during transportation.
