Description
Imaginary Authors O, Unknown! Eau de Parfum is a powdery smooth blend of iris and orris butter infused with dark, oriental tea. Each Imaginary Authors fragrance is inspired by a piece of fictional literature and O, Unknown! is the final work from the equally fictitious travel writer Philip Sava (other Imaginary Authors scents inspired by Sava’s journeys are Memoirs of a Trespasser and Cape Heartache). In O, Unknown! Sava is given one year to live, which prompts him to embark on an eastward journey of sensual discovery to Nepal, Tibet and China.
O, Unknown! is a fascinating fragrance of mystery that leaves a lot open ended. Top notes effuse a powdery, delicate iris which is peart, pink and not afraid to be pretty. A nose-tingling violet facet is a playful nod to classic sweetshop treats. Orris butter, as smooth and waxy as fairytale cosmetics, adds an indulgent texture good enough for a princess. O, Unknown!’s initial notes give the sense of a childhood tea party conjured up amid the cotton candy clouds of the mind’s eye.
How quick we are to dismiss the sweet, cheery and youthful. Imaginary Authors O, Unknown! is about celebrating the fleeting joys of daily life, but it also explores how they connect to cultural practises that span the generations. Black tea notes rounded out by smoky Lapsang Souchong Tincture add adult contrast underneath. Tea has been patiently grown and brewed for millenia and many a wisdom imparted over its warm, full-bodied aroma. Notes of aged whiskey barrel, the very definition of olfactive maturity, add a smoked wood resonance. In the base, characteristically creamy sandalwood mellows into an ambery embrace.
In Eastern spirituality, the ephemeral beauty of the cherry blossom is celebrated alongside the timelessness of transcendental meditation. O, Unknown!, too, is a scent of contradictions that connects momentary joy with eternal fulfilment. Like life itself, it is a fragrance of beauty that permits all as it tapers off into the unending om of the unknown.
Synopsis: “At age 65, when famed explorer and author Philip Sava was given less than a year to live, he set off from his home in Madagascar for parts unknown. Leaving all his belongings behind, he set off on foot, hopped a freighter across the Indian Ocean, and wandered into the Bangladeshi wilderness. His journey, which lasted over a decade, took him through Nepal and Tibet where his exploration turned spiritual and into rural China where months of solitude resulted in some of the most confessional observations ever committed to paper. This is the story of a man grappling with the meaning of life as he grasps at life’s last vestiges.”
