Filippo Sorcinelli Opus 1144 Extrait de Parfum is a powdery floriental niche perfume centred around sweet florals and creamy vanilla melding into a balsamic base of amber and musks. Part of Sorcinelli’s UNUM line, this delicate, devotional scent celebrates the soft side of the Gothic, the major architectural style which began with the completion of the Choir of the Basilica of Saint Denis on the outskirts of Paris in 1144. Opus 1144 Extrait de Parfum opens with the vivacious combination of bergamot and lemon, while elemi, a highly rare oriental resin shines bright and exotic against the leaden skies of Northern France. Filippo Sorcinelli Opus 1144 is a sensual celebration of a new period of ecclesiastic style – highlighting the celebratory rather than the sullen aspects of Medieval architecture.

The fragrance’s powdery heart is a sweet-scented pairing of iris and orchid while a creamy vanilla note swathed in soft amber and cashmere wood gives Opus 1144 the divine glow of a sunset seen through a stained glass window. The drydown is far removed from gothic stereotypes of grotesque, stone hewn gargoyles and gnarly edges. Instead, molten tears of benzoin – a thick, whitish resin from Sumatra – transforms this devotional perfume into an inebriatingly smooth balsam. The perfume’s complex and sweeping base is anchored by luxuriously expensive ambergris. Rich in pheromones and sourced from the Indian ocean, ambergris is a sumptuous scent fixative which harmoniously teams with sandalwood and musk to create a sacred olfactory foundation from which a deep sense of spirituality can awaken.
