An array of dry, spicy balsams and dark resins recreate an atmosphere which is equal parts soul-warming and foreboding. This mysterious scent marries bright, youthful notes of galbanum resin in the opening with a broodingly nostalgic background centred on the balsamic heat of incense. While the sweetly spiced, mildly medicinal notes of cinnamon bark bespeak of old-school candy, the aroma of childhood bliss is shadowed by the looming darkness of ancient resins. When burned myrrh, styrax, cedarwood and benzoin almost seem to whisper sensual secrets sublimated into heady fumes. This mysterious coalescing of elements forms an olfactory aura which is dry, smokey and subdued. His photographic series of the same name (‘there are no hands to caress my face’ in Italian) is a haunting collection of images from the 1960s portraying young Italian seminarians frolicking in the snow. The playful but poignant photographs highlight the incongruities between boyish frivolity and the conventional expectations of men of the cloth. The bright glare of the overexposed backgrounds works in striking contrast to the pitch black figures, while the jovial atmosphere of the scenes disturbingly jars with the stark solemnity of the ceremonial cassocks. The gravity defying cap is a reimagining of the swirling cassocks of the young seminarians twirling in the snow.

His wide ranging artistic talents and classical Italian reference points are reflected in his avant-garde bottle designs and the ritualistic and liturgical themes which infuse many of his works.
