Description
Filippo Sorcinelli But Not Today Extrait de Parfum is a seductive beast of a niche perfume from the house’s UMUM line inspired by our cinematic obsession with blood. The scent features dark animalics, tannin-laden leather notes and burnt pyrazines jostling with carnal florals to create an altogether menacing scent. The initial note is a surprisingly clean, salty blast. But this almost instantly congeals into the metallic tang of fresh blood. Utterly unusual for a scent; horrifying too… and also incredibly exciting! There’s nothing like the scent of a freshly inflicted wound to invigorate the senses – just think of But Not Today Extrait de Parfum as olfactory Fight Club. The fragrance’s violent opening bleeds into its darker, dirtier heart as the distinctive bodily facets of castoreum have a feral, predatory quality. The carnal, fleshy aroma is rounded by beautiful indolic floral notes headed by lily and carnation, highlighting the sophisticated side of this unique perfume. A dark leather accord is fashioned out of burned pyrazine notes with a touch of oakmoss, while an oud-like facet recreates the pulsating heat of a furlined animal. The result is a gruesomely gothic base which at the same time feels rich, playful and addictive – it’ll have you sniffing your wrists like a blood hungry vampire.
Filippo Sorcinelli But Not Today Extrait de Parfum is inspired by none other than Hannibal Lecter, the forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer from ‘The Silence of the Lambs’. The name itself is borrowed from one scene in which Hannibal eerily describes FBI agent Clarice Starling’s scent: “You use Evian skin cream, and sometimes you wear L’Air du Temps, …but not today”. More than a playful homage to Anthony Hopkins’ Oscar winning role, But Not Today Extrait de Parfum is a niche perfume that speaks to our own primordial fascination with blood, gruesomeness and maybe even our own mortality. But Not Today challenges us, it is an unsettling scent that makes us reconsider the boundaries of perfumery. It may not be for everyone, but it is a complex, intellectual scent which will appeal not only to film buffs and fragrance loving goths, but also to those who want to leave the olfactory everyday. Those who want the thrill of an edgy, no-frills, sugar-free, plasma-rich injection of a scent to shake up the habitual and discover new and exciting – maybe even blood-curdling – aspects of the self.
