It’s a fundamental fragrance which our very nature compels us to appreciate. Pangea was the first continent on Earth, about 335 million years ago. An ancient symbol of union, a mysterious and primordial past – utopic and dreamlike. Extra Virgo’s olfactive ode to this mythical terrain, Pangea, is inspired by earth, roots, leaves and rhizomes. Formulated with a never-seen-before marriage between rare small batch vintage Florentine orris root and mushroom absolutes including porcini, shitake and truffle. Pangea is an elegant nod to the golden era of perfumery – famed for its use of precious orris notes – but with a unique twist that will literally take you down Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit hole deep into the sweet and mysterious lairs of a sensual eternity.

The Etruscans were master perfumers who traded their potions all over the Mediterranean as far back as 1000 BC. They were among the first to harness the mysterious orris root (the root of the iris flower, which also happens to be the symbol of the city of Florence). The rhizomes, which are odourless when fresh, undergo a special ageing process to extract their sensual aromas, and require up to three years of curing. The search for the finest artisanal Tuscan orris root took years as it remains a well guarded secret amongst the Tuscan hills.

“During the Renaissance, especially in Florence, it was popular amongst royalty and power figures to build artificial caves known as grottos. The fascination with the archaic underground and ancestral pagan mysteries sparked a memory of our earthly origins and animal nature, which is too often forgotten in the age of progress. It is important to remember that tribes all over the world revere caves as sacred places and underground dwellings have given humankind shelter since prehistoric times and were even the original canvas for the birth of art in the form of Neolithic cave paintings.”

All Extra Virgo perfumes are produced in small batches using only the finest ingredients sourced through extensive research and extreme care. All Extra Virgo perfumes are composed of high grade natural ingredients (70 – 80%). The juice is aged for at least three months before being blended with natural alcohol at a concentration of around 25 – 30%.

After letting the blend cure for a month, the olfactive potions are bottled by hand into Italian crystal bottles and sealed with the brand’s signature black Carrara marble cap, inlaid with the gilded Extra Virgo monogram.
