Bogue Profumo MAAI Eau de Parfum is a nose-rollicking ride of a modern chypre. A carnal affair balancing rich floral notes, resinous woods and feral musks. This highly niche perfume is not for the faint-hearted, but rather for lovers of intensely deep, old-school fragrances. Like a lemon cut with a steel knife, the opening fizzes with metallic aldehydes. The citric zing quickly flips to animalic tang as civet asserts its presence within the scent like a living, breathing creature. While the heady sparks of metal and pulsating body give MAAI a full-throttled scent and sillage, the perfume retains playfully old-school elements such as musks, oakmoss, cedar and sandalwood.

A masterful remake of a vintage scent, the perfume’s beating floral heart is dense with green tuberose and indolic jasmine – creating a deeper, more brooding expression of femininity. The tingling aldehydes retreat during dry-down, revealing an opulent incense bed of warm woods, sweet resins and balsams. Haute perfumery at its finest, a velvet veil of amber sweeps over the edgy animalics – giving the scent an avant-garde, yet undeniably classical, warm-toned base. Bogue Profumo MAAI Eau de Parfum may seem like a juxtaposition of dissonant notes but the harmonious balance of disparate accords is what makes this scent a highly wearable, lovable beast.

An interesting bit of trivia; MAAI has been chosen by Luca Turin as Elizabeth Taylor’s mysterious character’s distinctive scent in the remake of Smell-O-Vision classic. ‘The Scent of Mystery’.
