Aether Arts John Frum Perfume Oil won the Best Perfume Prize in 2014 at the Art and Olfaction Awards in the Artisan Category!
Aether Arts John Frum Perfume Oil is a modern tropical fougere perfume featuring spicy Vanuatu pepper. John Frum was made for the iconic Burning Man festival in 2013, which took the fascinating history of cargo cults as its inspiration.
This unique tropical perfume transports you to the beautiful and remote Melanesian Islands. With a main note of Vanuatu pepper sourced from the island itself, John Frum hums with the heated spice of exotic pepper. A refreshing blend of lime and coconut-water cools things down and Aether Arts’ very own tropical fruit accord brings the far-off fragrance of a South Pacific rainforest. The scent of mischief flower, jasmine and ylang-ylang float on the trade winds. Exotic woods and vetiver bring things down to earth, while the everpresent Vanuatu pepper weaves together everything into a rounded and rustic perfumed totem.
The Scent Story: John Frum was made for the 2013 Burning Man festival, which featured the cargo cult as its art theme. In the Melanesian Islands, a cargo cult is a system of beliefs based around the expected arrival of ancestral spirits in ships bringing cargoes of food and other goods.
Picture for example the Second World War: a group of uniformed men show up on your South Pacific island with all sorts of magical cargo, providing you with amenities you never dreamed possible. They stay for a few years and then leave as abruptly as they came. As a native, you are left wondering where these people and all their cargo came from. Why did they leave and will they be coming back? Where do you get more canned food, carbonated beverages, alcohol, medicine? How do you restore life to the silent machinery? Named for the messianic figure-head of the Vanuatu Cargo Cult, John Frum is an attempt to directly experience a little bit of Vanuatu as a place and a culture.
Top notes: lime and coconut water, tropical fruits
