Description
Aedes De Venustas Iris Nazarena (Eau de Parfum) combines the most precious and ancient ingredients in a perfume that takes perfumery back to its roots and catapults it into the future. Iris occupies a precious place in the world of perfume raw materials: it costs more than gold and its unique fragrance can only be experienced six years after planting. In Aedes De Venustas Iris Nazarena, the rare root of the flower is reborn: in conversation with frankincense, its mysterious and sensual iris perfume pulses with harmony and captures the imagination of even those who are not iris fans.
Perfumer Ralf Schwieger has long wanted to offer a contemporary interpretation of iris without referring to the best-known iris perfumes. He also wanted to bring transparency to notes that could be considered sombre, and to end the perfume experience with something that is both mystical and eternally beautiful.
Aedes De Venustas Iris Nazarena takes its name from the rare Iris Bismarckiana species, also known as Iris Nazarena because it grows mainly in the mountains east of Nazareth. The uncanny beauty of the flower, with its brown or purple spots and delicate bluish-purple veins, seduced the founders of Aedes De Venustas when they saw it on a postcard.
The flower itself is not fragrant, and this is true of most iris species. Instead, it is the root, or rhizome, that is highly prized in perfumery. To become a perfume, the plant needs to develop for three years. It is then left to dry for a further three years before developing its characteristic scent: a blend of powder, wood and violet. It is then ground and distilled. Only then does the majestic iris rise for a fragrant journey that reflects the history of the land where Iris Nazarena grows.
The soft petals of the mystical iris muse are painted in a subtle blend of brown, purple and white. The ambrette allows the gentle light of dawn to shine on the top notes, the rose adds a touch of sensuality, and the cool, vibrant green of the star anise evokes the stylized stems and leaves of the flower. Resinous juniper berry, patchouli and vetiver hint at roots driven into dark earth and rock, while holy smoke rising from altars weaves its mineral, leathery tendrils along with clove, oud and frankincense as the perfume evolves. Incense permeates much of the Aedes De Venustas collection. This millennia-old sacrifice to the gods is the origin of perfumery, as the word ‘perfume’ itself comes from the Latin per fumare, meaning ‘through smoke’.
Wearing Aedes De Venustas Iris Nazarena exudes a rich sensuality, while bowing in reverence to its roots.
