Description
Aedes De Venustas Copal Azur (Eau de Parfum) is inspired by the clouds of burning copal swirling over Tulum – an aquatic fragrance like no other. Mayan incense rises from ancient temples, mingling with the salty spray of the sea and the green breeze of the jungle.
Aedes De Venustas Copal Azur’s muse is the Mayan incense from the resin of the copal tree. Frankincense permeates most of the perfume house’s scents, in this perfume master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour was asked to bring incense from the temples to the coastal jungle.
Strikingly similar to frankincense, copal, whose name means “incense” in Nahuatl, is derived from various species of trees native to Central and South America. Similar to incense in ancient Egypt or Greece, it was burnt by the Maya and Aztecs to ‘feed’ the gods, and is still used for spiritual purposes in Mexico. Since copal resin cannot be used as a perfume ingredient, three different extracts of incense are used to evoke it in the top and base notes, accounting for an extravagant 30% (!) of the formula.
Like the Mayan citadel towering over the lush coastal paradise of Tulum, the fragrance of Aedes De Venustas Copal Azur is dominated by a sheer cliff smoking mineral notes. Ozonic and saline notes evoke the Caribbean Sea and the local cenotes, underground freshwater pools on the Yucatán Peninsula. Flashes of green suggest lush Mexican jungles, cardamom peeking through the damp, woody undergrowth of patchouli and myrrh. And a hint of almond-scented tonka bean and ambergris points at the roundness and golden glow of the Jaguar god of earth fire, copal.
Aedes De Venustas Copal Azur is a perfume for those who want to step out of the world of incense perfumes for a very unique take in space and time with a brand new signature perfume.
