Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser Eau de Parfum is a voluptuously warm and resinous vanilla scent inspired by the exotic landscapes of Madagascar. All Imaginary Authors scents are based on fictitious works of literature and Memoirs of a Trespasser is one of a number of scents inspired by the equally fictitious travel writer Philip Sava (Others Imaginary Authors scents based on his works include Cape Heartache). Memoirs of a Trespasser, the centrepiece of his writing, is an homage to Sava’s adopted home of Madagascar.

Memoirs of a Trespasser is a balsam against the humdrum of daily life and a restorative against the dreariness of grey winter’s day. If a fantasy adventure was in scent form, Memoirs of a Trespasser would be it. Like tincture of olde worlde luxury, the opening is soothingly sweet and dusted in spices, the kind that would have laden ships traversing the globe during the age of discovery. Jewel in the crown is a seductively rich vanilla with a resonant, ambery warmth. This prized vanilla is no sweet scented confection, it is dark and woody, the aroma of vanilla transported in boozy oak barrels that have doubled as rum casks in the past.

Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser is as much about the comforts of home as it is about adventures into an idealised paradise. This is a soft, cosy scent with a voluptuous, velvety creaminess. Its seductive aroma is laced with woods and a subtle smokey heat – warm, spiced milk enjoyed in front of the fireplace with wisps of incense in the air. In Memoirs of a Trespasser, luxurious woods and resins are inseparably intertwined with the indulgence of gourmand vanilla. Deep-toned benzoin resin feels almost edible with its sweet, vanilla warmth and the caramel tones in guaicwood have a temptingly chewy texture. Tying everything together, wafts of luxurious myrrh fills the air with its rich, resiny depth.

Synopsis: “The early exploration writing of Philip Sava bent the limits of post-modern fiction, revealing fantastical worlds that fooled many into believing they were, in fact, real. Sava’s kaleidoscopic collections, of which Memoirs of a Trespasser is the undeniable centerpiece, drew upon true experiences from his exotic travels but were infused with a hallucinatory inventiveness that set his work apart from others in the genre.

Though Sava had associates all over the world, he spent most of his time living in solitude on a ranch in southern Madagascar. When interrogated by the press on his cloistered lifestyle he notoriously answered, “Who needs love when there is still cognac in the glass?”
