Based on a reimagining of Puccini’s classic opera, Madame Butterfly, the scent is a deliberate contrast to the traditional narrative which ends in tragedy for young Cio-Cio San as her husband abandons her for a new American wife. Senyokô’s Madama Butterfly II represents a modern day young woman celebrating reincarnation and independence. Here Cio-Cio San’s sadness gives way to optimism and rebirth.

Senyokô Madama Butterfly II is a perfume with a fragrance pyramid which artfully unfolds like the three acts of this imagined opera. Top notes, functioning as the first act, feature momentary fresh notes of pink pepper and angelica intertwined with the soft citrus bouquet of quince, clementine and vestiges of sparkling tagettes. An aromatic combination representing the fragility and naivety that once haunted Cio-Cio San, now only ﬂeeting memories. She is a ﬂower ready to blossom.

Like a second act, the scent’s heart notes offer an olfactory metamorphosis. Ethereal incense and galbanum resins encase budding ﬂoral tones, which burst forth not only as scented ﬂowers in bloom but also as lush red-fruits and berries. This seamless transition of scents and textures illustrates the dual nature of Cio-Cio San’s shifting personality: hard and soft, elegant yet fearless. At its heart, Madama Butterﬂy II is delicately green: cocooned in brittle resins, grounded by roots, surrounded by unfamiliar fruits and ﬂowers.

Act III features assertive base notes of musk and amber uniting to become a vigorous accord which sustains and adds unwavering strength to the perfume composition. A sensuous resolve which makes the scent seem equal parts modern and traditional. The inherent dynamics found within the ﬁnal stages of Madama Butterﬂy II act as a niche perfume representation of the woman Cio-Cio San has become – as she transcends her state of innocence to achieve liberation.
